Xplorer Maps creates the world’s finest hand-drawn and hand-lettered illustrations of national parks and other significant historical sites and destinations throughout the world. Every line, letter, and icon is unique, custom, and original to each new map we render. Originally designed to pay homage to the early cartographers, these high-quality and exceptionally detailed custom maps are rendered by Chris Robitaille (Xplorer Maps artist and co-owner) using an antique, old-world style.
The maps make excellent gifts and are attractive as framed art for home, office, resort, or hotel decor.
Setting us apart from any other “map product” on the market, our fine-art illustrations have been approved by National Park Service specialists and their respective non-profit partners on the basis of educational merit, interpretive value, cultural relevance, and historical and geographic accuracy. There are simply no other maps that can compare anywhere!
From the epic waterfalls and immense granite cliffs to the giant Sequoia groves, the Yosemite National Park map highlights all this Californian treasure has to offer. Artist Chris Robitaille captures not only the incredible landscapes with landmarks like ‘El Capitan’ and ‘Sentinel Falls’, but touches on the parks history and its wildly broad biological diversity. Xplorer Maps consulted and was guided by the Yosemite Conservancy to help achieve historic, geologic and cultural accuracy throughout the artistic process and as such, this unique illustration has been officially approved for sale within Yosemite National Park boundaries and has been officially endorsed by the Conservancy. The Yosemite National Park map is an Xplorer Maps exclusive reproduction of artist Chris Robitaille's antique, old-world style illustration printed on heavy-duty 80 lb. cover stock in Montana, USA.
Chris Robitaille was born in Toronto, Canada, and graduated from the Ontario College of Art where upon graduation, he was awarded the Will Davies Award for Excellence in Illustration. His work in Toronto as a story-board artist gave him a strong understanding of the importance of competent drawing and sound composition, elements that have been an integral part of his work over the years.
Chris moved to Kenya in the early 1990s, turning his attention to landscape painting where he enjoyed an increased level of productivity due in no small part to the beauty he saw around him. He has had dozens of solo exhibitions and his work hangs in numerous corporate and private collections worldwide.
Since 2007, Chris, his wife Vanessa and their children Max and Becca have lived in Suzhou, China; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and most recently Bangkok, Thailand following the professional career of Ness in international education. The Xplorer Maps business and family adventures continue with regular visits back home to Toronto and Montana.
After months of research for geographical and historical accuracy and a myriad of sketches, world-renowned illustrator Chris Robitaille gets to the pen amp; ink drawing stage.
Pen and ink is followed by multiple layers of watercolor washes to bring colorful vibrancy to each and every Xplorer Maps piece of art.
The end result is an entirely custom, unique, and original piece of art that has been fully vetted for educational merit, historical and geographic accuracy, and cultural relevance. Depending on the depth of detail in the map being rendered, the actual art process takes anywhere from 5-8 weeks.
THE REAL DEAL!
A lot of map art is simply stock or "open source" imagery with a logo or small piece of custom art overlaid such that it can then be marketed as "original, custom, art". Xplorer Maps is different. Every single line, letter, and image has been intricately rendered entirely by hand. Each is unique and original to every new map we create. These maps are truly custom, one-of-a-kind Chris Robitaille pieces of art!
